ASSASSIN'S CREED: UNITY

Assassin"s Creed Unity came out seven years ago, and the updates after its initial release have made it a great game that has aged well.

Assassin’s Creed Unity has been out for almost seven years now. In that time, it has not changed too much, but it is still a game worth revisiting. Honestly, the game is also worth a preliminary playthrough for any fans of the Assassin’s Creed series that have not played it yet. While Unity does not reinvent the series, it is a stepping point for the whole Assassin’s Creed franchise"s future.

Unity is layered with different aspects that set it apart from the other earlier and later games in the series. While Origins, Odyssey, and the most recent Assassin"s Creed Valhalla have all taken broader approaches to the series, Unity built itself on the tight environments that were common at the time. While the game did receive some backlash at its release, Assassin’s Creed Unity is still full of reasons to play after so long.

Inexpensive for a Full AAA Game

Assassin
The easiest justification for those fans that question whether or not Unity is a title worth visiting is the game’s price point. Having aged some, it has dropped down from the $60 that new releases saw for so long, and is at a much more manageable $30. For people that might find this price still too high for an older game, waiting for a sale is a great plan too, like Ubisoft"s current sale for its Switch games. If it is ever seen for sale with a listing below $30, it is definitely worth the money. The game does not feature a ton of DLC either which means that the main story is worth getting into without concerns that another $40 will have to be spent for everything to feel complete.

Assassins Creed Unity Multiplayer
The game’s multiplayer is rather unique in the series, and is a feature that would be great to see return to the Assassin’s Creed franchise. A campaign that incorporates a four-person co-op system is not something that had been seen in the franchise before, and it was a fun co-op experience. While it might not work well with current titles, it could be revisited if the franchise does return to densely inhabited environments with the next Assassin’s Creed release.

One of the many glitches found in Assassin
Assassin"s Creed Unity saw a huge improvement post-launch. While its initial release was plagued with bugs and glitches, definitely comparable to the recent release of Cyberpunk 2077, many of the game"s problems were fixed with updates. Technical issues were sanded down and buffed out to create a cleaner player experience. The game that remained was a visionary title for its time, and it is unfortunate that some of its features have not remained prominent in recent Assassin"s Creed titles.

Furthermore, for those who prefer the Xbox platform, FPS Boost is a huge thing. AC Unity was one of those FPS Boost games; for those who want to make the most of it, FPS Boost makes it run at 60 FPS, really maximizing its beauty on a console.

Arno perched on a building
Assassin’s Creed Unity is a game built on its atmosphere. The streets are packed and the NPCs are responsive to events around them. With a 1:1 scale of revolutionary Paris, the game delivered awesome views to players without the need to leave home. A lot of folks have not been able to get out of the house at all in the past year, and Unity can provide a great escape from the comfort of one’s own home.

Unity was one of those games that are way ahead of its time. The environment of the game alone makes it a title that could benefit from a re-release in order to take advantage of newer hardware. It tried to do a lot with what it had available, and this is at least partly why its initial release had so many technical issues. The likelihood of a remake might not be great, but it still looks incredible on consoles and PC, albeit not as graphically stunning as newer games.

A lot of games in the last decade have gotten into the habit of forging themselves a need for a companion app. While they can be useful, such as Destiny 2’s, others can impose artificial limits on what players can do. Unity’s app was much more the latter, and its removal improved the game tremendously. When it was in service it was necessary to access certain content, but it has since been retired and that content was made available to all players through an update to the game.

Unity had dedicated stealth and cover-to-cover systems. While the feature was not as in-depth as Metal Gear Solid and other stealth games, it made certain aspects of an assassin’s job easier and feel more realistic. The systems allowed for more discretion from players and made it so that not every encounter needed to involve large fights. While the series has always made it a point to have players evade enemies, the stealth system allowed for infiltration and observation instead of murder and retreat every time a target was being hunted.

Assassin’s Creed has a reputation for alternate history, even rumors that the new game will focus on the Hundred Years" War, and Unity is no exception to this. The game focuses on the French Revolution and one of the most influential times in modern human history. While there are certainly criticisms to be made about how the revolution is portrayed in the game, the story itself is still worth a playthrough. The immersion in a videogame’s story often feels worlds different than it does to simply read about the events that happened in a book. Obviously, not all of the game"s plot points are an accurate representation, but it is still a great period for the franchise to have visited.

Unity is before the major style-shift of Assassin"s Creed and the growing prominence of the Isu. The important ancient species of God-like humanoids have gained more and more attention in Assassin’s Creed, but Unity still plays largely like a classic Assassin"s Creed game. While the series most recent installments have been praised for their changes in direction, there is nothing wrong with wanting to fight off the templars instead of mythical creatures in Assassin’s Creed games. If the styles of Assassin"s Creed through Assassin"s Creed 3 are something that feels like the newer games are lacking, Unity can provide a solid middle point.

Assassin’s Creed Unity is the first time that players are able to actually see a Sword of Eden. The mystical weapons were created by the ancient Isu and wield immense power. Swords have been a staple in Assassin’s Creed for years, but these legendary weapons offer immense power. As remnants of the Isu and weapons that survived the Great Catastrophe, they have no equal. The power they represent and wield make them an obvious conflict in the series overall plot, and they"ve continued to show up in Assassin"s Creed games since Unity.

Assassin’s Creed Unity is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
