The Access Initiative sầu is the largest network in the world dedicated lớn ensuring that citizens have sầu the right and ability to lớn influence decisions about the natural resources that sustain their communities.

Access lớn information, access lớn public participation, & access to lớn justice (the three “access rights”) are practical means of ensuring that decisions by governments consider sustainable development concerns and the interests of the poor.

An informed và empowered public monitors government & corporate performance, is alert to lớn problems, challenges the conventional wisdom of government or corporate decision-makers, discusses the issues, organizes social & political change, & demands improvements. Where independent courts supply remedy and redress without political interference, the public can better hold decision makers accountable.

TAI Assessment Toolkit

At the heart of The Access Initiative’s (TAI’s) work is an Assessment Toolkit that helps civil society coalitions pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in environmental governance in their countries & identify opportunities lớn make positive sầu changes. Using a framework of case studies và indicators that evaluate both laws on the books & government practices on the ground, TAI coalitions answer questions such as:

Does the government insize citizens when pollution poses a health threat?Do citizens have a say in how natural resources are used?Does the justice system equitably resolve environmental disputes?

Based on experience gained from conducting 32 assessments around the world, TAI updated its assessment toolkit in 2006. As part of the update, web-based software was developed khổng lồ help TAI coalitions easily conduct assessments, analyze their findings, và store their data.

Access the TAI Assessment Toolkit here.

ARIA’s Rapid Institutional Analysis for Adaptation (ARIA) is a tool for civil-society organizations khổng lồ aid national governments in responding to lớn climate change. The tool examines four qualities of decision making:

ComprehensivenessTransparency and participationCapacityAccountability

National coalitions of NGOs focus on identifying gaps in systems for vulnerability và impacts assessment, prioritization, coordination, information management, and adaptation mainstreaming. Providing tools for civil society organizations khổng lồ evaluate institutional capađô thị is a key component of a broader strategy to focus adaptation efforts on the needs of vulnerable populations, the ecosystems they depkết thúc on, and the systems of governance which aid in development & resilience. ARIA has been used by civil society organizations in Bolivia, Ghamãng cầu, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Trinidad & Tobago, và Saint Lucia.
